Kano Emirate is almost synonymous with Kano State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (see the geography) but some parts of the earlier Kano Emirate are in Jigawa State and they now constitute Dutse and Ringim Emirates. The Emir is the head of the Emirate and the Emirate Council is the authority that leads the Emirate made up of the Emir and members who are called councilors some of them are full time members while others are part time. The Emir of Kano has assumed Community Leadership since the Local Government Reforms that transferred the executive power he exercised to the local councils who are either elected by the people or appointed by the Kano State Governor. The Kano Emirate is now the custodian of the culture and religion of the people of Kano. Many of the Mosques and Imams of the State owe their allegiance to the Emir who appoints them. The Emir of Kano is one of the foremost leaders of Hausa Muslims all over the world who number about 100 million. One of the most important features of the cultural heritage of Kano is the Durbar by the Emir and his chiefs and it is the largest procession of colorful horses in the world (see the section on the Durbar). |
